Windows Firewall Blocking Application — Allow or Unblock Programs Through Firewall

Warningsecurity

Overview

Fix applications blocked by Windows Defender Firewall including games, remote desktop, development servers, and network tools failing to connect.

Key Details

  • Windows Defender Firewall blocks inbound connections to applications by default for security
  • When an application first tries to listen for connections, Windows prompts to allow or block it
  • If the prompt was dismissed or 'Block' was selected, the app silently fails to receive connections
  • Outbound connections are allowed by default — firewall primarily blocks incoming traffic
  • Firewall rules can be set per network profile: Domain, Private, and Public

Common Causes

  • Application blocked when the firewall prompt was dismissed or 'Block' was clicked accidentally
  • New application not yet known to the firewall requesting network access
  • Group Policy or antivirus software overriding Windows Firewall settings
  • Firewall rules reset after a Windows update removing previously allowed applications

Steps

  1. 1Open Windows Firewall: Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Security > Firewall & network protection
  2. 2Click 'Allow an app through firewall' > Change settings > check both Private and Public for your application
  3. 3If the app is not listed: click 'Allow another app' > Browse > find the application executable
  4. 4For development servers: allow the specific port in Advanced settings > Inbound Rules > New Rule > Port
  5. 5Temporarily disable firewall to test (re-enable immediately): click the active network profile > toggle off

Frequently Asked Questions

Never disable the firewall permanently. Only disable temporarily for testing. Instead, create specific allow rules for the applications that need network access while keeping the firewall active for everything else.
