Mac Software Update Errors — Update Failed, Not Enough Space, and Stuck Updates

Errorsystem

Overview

Fix macOS software update errors including 'An error occurred while installing the update', insufficient space, stuck updates, and download verification failures.

Key Details

  • macOS updates require 15-35GB of free space depending on the update type (security patch vs major upgrade)
  • Updates are downloaded to /System/Library/AssetsV2/ and applied during restart
  • A stuck update during installation can leave the Mac in an unbootable state
  • Software Update checks Apple's content delivery network which can be slow during launch days
  • T2 chip or Apple Silicon firmware updates are included in some macOS updates and cannot be interrupted

Common Causes

  • Insufficient free disk space for the update download and installation
  • Network connection dropped during download causing a corrupted update package
  • Third-party security software blocking the update process
  • Power loss during installation (always connect to power during macOS updates)
  • Apple CDN overloaded shortly after a new macOS release

Steps

  1. 1Free up space: need at least 35GB free for major updates, 15GB for minor updates
  2. 2Check network: use Ethernet if WiFi is unreliable, restart router if download is slow
  3. 3Clear update cache: sudo rm -rf /Library/Updates/* then retry the update
  4. 4Boot into Safe Mode and try the update from there (disables third-party interference)
  5. 5If update is stuck during install (progress bar not moving for 30+ min): force restart and try again
  6. 6Download the full installer from App Store: search for 'macOS Sequoia' (or current version) and use that instead
