Mac Bluetooth Errors — Connection Failures, Audio Drops, and Pairing Issues

Warningnetwork

Overview

Fix Mac Bluetooth errors including devices not connecting, audio cutting out, AirPods pairing failures, and Bluetooth module reset procedures.

Key Details

  • macOS stores Bluetooth pairing data in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
  • Bluetooth audio issues are often caused by interference or codec switching between SBC and AAC
  • AirPods may show as connected but route audio elsewhere due to handoff/switching features
  • Resetting the Bluetooth module removes all pairings and can fix persistent connection issues
  • macOS Sonoma and later include improved Bluetooth stack but may have compatibility issues with older devices

Common Causes

  • Corrupted Bluetooth pairing database
  • Bluetooth module firmware glitch requiring hardware reset
  • WiFi interference on 2.4GHz band conflicting with Bluetooth signals
  • Too many paired Bluetooth devices causing connection management issues
  • macOS update changing Bluetooth driver behavior with existing devices

Steps

  1. 1Reset Bluetooth module: hold Shift+Option, click Bluetooth icon in menu bar > Reset the Bluetooth module (older macOS) or Debug > Reset Bluetooth module
  2. 2Delete Bluetooth plist: sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist then restart
  3. 3Remove and re-pair the device: System Settings > Bluetooth > hover device > X to remove, then re-pair
  4. 4For AirPods: put in case, hold setup button 15 seconds until light flashes amber, re-pair
  5. 5Reset SMC and NVRAM: may resolve hardware-level Bluetooth issues
  6. 6If audio cuts out: move closer to Mac, reduce WiFi interference, check for USB 3.0 interference from hubs
